What is Meteorologist? |
A meteorologist is the scientist that studies weather. They work very hard daily to deliver weather predictions or forecasts of the areas we live and work. Not only do they study daily weather, but they look at seasonal weather patterns of certain global areas to help them make their predictions. Remember that when we make predictions, we are making an educated guess based on the facts that we have and we know that just because that was our guess, that is not always what happens or occurs. Meteorologists have a tough job because of this and can easily been seen on a local weather station giving their predictions.
They also have an important job when we have inclement or severe weather. Based on their predictions, people can make decisions that will protect their safety in these different situations. Because of updated weather measuring tools and the data they collect, a meteorologist can warn people in the area the weather might effect. This is not always with a lot of time but as technology improves, so does their ability to make these helpful predictions. |
Cloud Type and WeatherOne major predicting factor is cloud formation. The types of clouds forming in an area are great indicators of how water is moving through the environment at the time. As we have previously learned, the water cycle indicates how temperature in the atmosphere effects who the quickly the water moves through the environment and what stage it is moving through. We can use this information to help us predict upcoming weather at a certain time.

Cumulus Clouds:
puffy, white, like cotton balls -predict fair weather -flat base and rounded, fluffy tops |
Cirrus Clouds:
Thin, wispy, feather-like -usually means a change in weather in the next 24 hours -predict fair to pleasant weather |
Stratus Clouds:
Flat, wide, blanket-like -usually bring a light mist or drizzle -resembles fog that doesn't reach the ground |
Cumulonimbus Clouds:
Puffy, gray -means heavy rain, snow, hail, or lightning is coming |
So using this info.....how do we get a weather prediction? |
And how does location and climate effect weather? |
Now let's put it all together and show what we have learned.
I want you to create a video or presentation using the application of your choice. (For example, Educreations, Google Presentations, Keynote) Your presentation/video must tell someone the following:
-how we can use the local weather to make weather predictions (this could include cloud types, weather maps, weather tools
-what job studies the weather and why they are important to predicting the weather
-how the weather in different climates or areas of the world can be different or have different predictions based on the season of the year
You need to include the following in your presentation/video:
-correct spelling
-images to illustrate your topic
-easy to read fonts and colors
-purpose of your project
-authors
-resources for your information
When you have completed your presentation/video, please submit your link or file to your project below. You may work with a partner on this activity. There should only be 1-2 people in EACH group.
